안정 (anjung) means stability. The specific quality of something that is settled — not because it cannot move, but because it has found the exactly right position and has no reason to leave it. A person who is 안정 is not rigid. They are at home in themselves. A room that has 안정 is not frozen — it is resolved.
The bed should be the most 안정 thing in a room. It is the largest piece, the heaviest, the one you return to every night. When a bed is wrong — wrong height, wrong scale, wrong proportion to the ceiling — everything else in the room feels slightly unsettled. Like a painting hung two centimetres off centre. You notice it without knowing why.
THE SCALE PROBLEM THAT CATALOGUE BEDS CANNOT SOLVE
Bangkok's premium condos have a specific challenge that Italian catalogue beds are not designed for. The buildings are generally newer — which means higher ceilings in some developments, and lower ceilings in others. It means rooms that are often wider than they are long, or longer than they are wide, in configurations that do not match the standard "master bedroom" the furniture brands photograph their pieces in.
A bed specified at a standard headboard height of 120cm looks entirely different in a room with 2.8-metre ceilings than in a room with 3.2-metre ceilings. In the lower room, it reads as oversized. In the higher room, it can look unanchored — a piece of furniture floating in a space that dwarfs it.
The Anjung's headboard height is set in consultation, after measuring the room. We are not designing a bed. We are designing a bed for a specific room. The height that makes the room feel resolved in the first case is not the same number as in the second. We calculate both.
THE HEADBOARD AS THE ROOM'S FOCAL POINT
The headboard of the Anjung is where the design conversation becomes most personal. A solid wood panel headboard — in walnut or oak, with careful attention to grain direction — reads as warmth and permanence. A lacquered panel — in matte cream, warm white, or a deeper tone — reads as considered restraint. An upholstered headboard — in linen, boucle, or leather — reads as comfort and luxury.
None of these is universally correct. The right choice depends on the rest of the room: the floor material, the bedside table style, the wall colour, the amount of natural light, and the character the client wants the room to project. We rarely recommend a headboard type without seeing the room and understanding all of these things. An upholstered headboard in a room that already has soft materials everywhere can push a room too far into casualness. A lacquered panel in a room that is otherwise all wood and textile can be exactly the right contrast.
"THE BED IS THE ROOM'S ANCHOR. GET THE SCALE AND THE SURFACE RIGHT AND EVERYTHING ELSE FALLS INTO PLACE. GET IT WRONG AND NOTHING EVER QUITE DOES."
STORAGE: THE DECISION THAT LIVES UNDER THE SURFACE
The most practical design decision in the Anjung commission is whether to include under-bed storage drawers. In Bangkok's condos — where wardrobe space is often at a premium regardless of how well the built-in storage is designed — under-bed drawers can reclaim significant storage without changing the visual character of the bed at all.
The drawers are concealed beneath the frame, running on smooth full-extension runners, with push-to-open or integrated bar pulls depending on the preferred aesthetic. They are built to the same specification as the frame — solid wood faces, dovetail corners, soft-close. Not an afterthought. A considered part of the design.
For clients who do not need the storage, the base is a clean plinth. No visible legs, no gap between frame and floor, no accumulation of dust and objects that would otherwise collect there. Clean. Resolved. 안정.
THE NIGHT TABLES AS AN EXTENSION
A significant number of Anjung commissions include bedside tables designed as an extension of the bed frame — either floating shelves fixed at the same height as the frame surface, or freestanding volumes built to match the frame's material and proportion exactly. This is not a standard option in any catalogue. It is a design decision that produces bedrooms that look genuinely considered, as opposed to assembled.
When the bed frame and the bedside tables are the same material, the same finish, the same proportional system — the bedroom has 안정. The room holds its position.
