TEUM

interval — the purposeful space between

틈 (teum) is the gap. The interval. The small space between two things that makes both of them more legible. In Korean design thinking, 틈 is not absence — it is a designed element. The space between a window frame and the wall. The gap between two cushions on a sofa. The interval between a piece of furniture and the wall behind it. 틈 is what makes the room breathe.

A side table occupies 틈 — it lives in the interval between a sofa and the space around it, or beside a chair, or next to a bed. It is a small piece. But it is among the most visible, because it sits at the level you look from when seated. The Teum is designed to occupy that interval with complete precision and no excess.

HEIGHT AS THE ONLY CRITICAL DIMENSION

The height of a side table is its most important dimension. Not its top material, not its form — its height. A side table that sits at the arm height of the chair or sofa it serves means you reach across level ground for your glass. A table that sits too low requires you to bend. Too high, and you lift slightly rather than reaching. The Teum's height is set after measuring the arm height of the seating it will serve. This is specified in the brief and confirmed on site before fabrication begins.

The top dimension is secondary. A Teum beside a sofa arm needs only to hold a glass, a phone, and possibly a book. 30cm by 30cm is almost always sufficient. A Teum beside a bed serves more — it holds a lamp, a phone, a glass, whatever you reach for in the night — and may be 40cm by 40cm. The dimension follows the function.

MATERIAL AS PUNCTUATION

The Teum in stone — a small Calacatta or travertine top on a thin steel leg — is punctuation in a room. It draws the eye and then releases it. In wood, it extends the room's existing material language without adding to it. The Teum is the one piece in a room where the material can contrast significantly with everything around it, because its scale is small enough to allow this without dominating. A brass-top Teum in a room of wood and linen is a decision. It reads as one.
