PUM

품 (pum) means embrace. Holding someone or something close. The warmth of something that surrounds rather than supports. In Korean, 품 is used to describe both the physical act of holding and the quality of warmth and security in a space or relationship. It is the word for the safest feeling.

An ottoman embodies this more directly than any other piece of furniture. It asks nothing of the person using it. It gives the foot somewhere to rest, the room somewhere to look, and the conversation somewhere to gather. The Pum is designed to do all three without drawing attention to itself.

THE OTTOMAN AS A ROOM DECISION

An ottoman in a living room is not furniture — it is a decision about how you want your room to feel. A large, low ottoman in the centre of a seating arrangement says: this room is for staying. For settling in. For long evenings with bare feet. A smaller ottoman pulled to the side of an armchair says: there is one person here who has found their place. Both decisions are correct. They are different decisions.

The Pum is available in two proportions. The large square version — typically 80cm to 100cm square — occupies the centre of a seating arrangement and functions as both ottoman and occasional table. The smaller rectangular version — 60cm by 40cm — pairs with a single chair and is about individual comfort, not room arrangement. The proportion you choose is a question about how you live, not just how you decorate.

FIRMNESS AS A DESIGN CHOICE

The Pum is built firmer than most ottomans. Not hard — but firm enough to use as a surface, to sit on, to put a tray on. A too-soft ottoman sinks under the weight of a book and a glass of water. It cannot be sat on by a guest without feeling inadequate. The Pum's cushion specification is down-wrapped high-density foam at a firmness that holds its form under load. You can rest your feet on it, your elbows, or yourself. It holds all three equally well.
