KYEO

켜 (kyeo) is a layer. A stratum. One horizontal plane in a sequence of planes, each separated from the next by a deliberate interval. In traditional Korean architecture, the 켜 is used to describe the layered structure of a roof, or the levels of a pagoda — forms where the repetition of horizontal elements at precise intervals creates a visual rhythm that is both structural and beautiful.

Open shelving is 켜 made furniture. It is a series of horizontal surfaces stacked at intervals. The quality of the piece depends entirely on whether those intervals are correct — sized for what sits on them, related to each other in proportional coherence, and set against the wall at a scale that the room can absorb.

THE SHELF HEIGHT PROBLEM

Standard shelving units are built to standard shelf heights because they are sold to unknown people for unknown objects. The intervals are a compromise. The Kyeo begins with the question: what lives here? Books require different shelf heights than objects. Objects benefit from more varied intervals to create visual rhythm. AV equipment has specific depth requirements. Plants need height for light.

The Kyeo's shelf spacing is specified per zone. Not uniform — intentional. A zone for books, a zone for objects, a zone for display, and a zone for things that change. Each is sized for its purpose. The result is a shelving unit that reads as curated rather than filled.

WALL-MOUNTED VS. FREESTANDING

The Kyeo is available in both configurations. Wall-mounted makes the piece lighter — the shelves appear to float, and the floor below is continuous. Freestanding treats the piece as an object — more sculptural, moveable, complete in itself. The choice depends on the room's architecture and how permanent the installation should feel. In Bangkok's condo market, wall-mounting requires approval from building management in some developments — we check this before specifying.
